The guardian set can be upgraded like any other HR armor, all the way up to 70 defense per piece; is gonna be in the 80s with augmentation. Once you get to MR, then that's when you'll be able to get the real armor. It made everything a cakewalk and pointless. Defender armor fosters terrible habits and allows a player to breeze through the base game with next to zero trouble and then drops them into a much harder version of the game while also making the training wheels obsolete. I've got a few hundred hours in MHW and I've personally found that skipping through the low rank stuff with the guardian armour is what you should probably do (unless it's your first playthrough). I did make some armor, but it was more of a mix set of armor, making use of skills that I would be needing, like attack boost for the earlier stages, so I could kill monsters more easily. Just look up a skill you like and get armor with the most amount of that skill, mhw really wants players to mix and match armor that they like. I Started few Days ago with MHW basic and now have the ICEBORNE expansion. I first tried to get into MHW when it first released on PC, but found the learning curve too steep (and it was buggy as hell on release). Obviously the armor set is not ideal for bow builds from the outset, and I was still able to take down Anja with ease. So in terms of actual armor, not really; there are endgame sets that will have higher defense, but the difference is not gonna be huge. The defender weapons do roughly the same damage as a rarity 9 weapon but they’ll get you through about the first 3 fights and any starting grind you’ll do. It was much easier to get into with the guardian armor. there's so 14 different types of weapon classes and you'd always be short on materials for most part of the early game. If that’s your goal then I’m pretty sure you can safely use the guardian armor for the whole base game. I would personally rather have a real experience than get carried by my armor. If you have, just finish all optional quests that you missed and then do some investigations hunting multiple monsters ("apex" monsters give more XP). It's completely fine. From there just craft gear with skills that you think you can use, as you beat monsters and get the hang of the game.
